Evergreen Jazz Festival

The seeds of the Evergreen Jazz Festival were sown in 1999 at a birthday party for long-time Evergreen resident Sterling Nelson. Sterling had served as president of the Denver Jazz Club as far back as 1960, and his birthday party included unrehearsed performances by eight top Colorado jazz musicians.

Happily, Evergreen was no stranger to jazz. In the late ’60s and early ’70s, Evergreen hosted jazz greats like Count Basie and Duke Ellington at a club called The Red Ram. Now known as Little Bear, this infamous night club has served as one of our Festival venues. Another of our venues, the Elks Lodge, hosted the Evergreen Ragtime Bash throughout the ’90s, thanks to the efforts of local jazz pianist George Keeler.

Building on this jazz heritage, Sterling and a small group of volunteers staged the first Evergreen Jazz Festival in 2001. Nine world-class bands, including the Golden Gate Rhythm Machine and James Dapogny’s Chicago Jazz Band performed for enthusiastic audiences.

Each year has seen the Evergreen Jazz Festival attract more jazz fans as word spreads about this weekend of great music, and the Festival continues to garner high praise not only from audiences, but from musicians and jazz critics as well. Join us for the 2019 Evergreen Jazz Festival taking place throughout five different venues on Friday, July 26th 12pm-11pm, Saturday July 27th 10am-10pm, and Sunday July 28th 11am-6pm.

The Muddy Buck Cafe

“Nothing brings friends and families together like warm drinks and freshly made food”

Nothing brings friends and families together like warm drinks and freshly made food – We feel fortunate to be a part of that kindred connection.

Proudly locally owned and operated, The Muddy Buck Cafe is Evergreen’s only fresh-roasting coffee house. Decadent brunch foods and pastries paired with exceptional coffee make The Muddy Buck what is is today.

The Muddy Buck is located in the historic Evergreen Hotel building, founded in 1896. The building has undergone many transformations and occupants over time, including the original  “Ice House” which provided refrigeration for the Evergreen community (they still use the original ice storage unit as a cooler today). Several structure fires over the years have altered the interior, and you can still see the charring on the original wood beams and rock walls which give the building it’s unique character.

From the Big Buck Breakfast Burrito to the Buck Eyed Egg, their breakfast menu is sure to impress! For lunch, try one of their six phenominal sandwiches served with Colorado Crafted chips, or how about a chicken flatbread with grilled basil chicken, sun-dried tomato basil pesto, fresh arugula, balsamic drizzle and roasted garlic cloves? Yum!

Coffee, Cocoa, and Cocktails sums up their exceptionally large drink menu ranging from numerous roasts of coffee and espresso, to house made chai tea, Italian sodas and more! Enjoy a mimosa or bloody mary with brunch on their patio right in the heart of downtown.

Great location, exceptional coffee and delicious food ~ Whether you’re a local or just visiting, The Muddy Buck Cafe is a must-go!

Book Direct and Save

Whether you’re planning a family vacation, business trip, reunion, or just a weekend getaway, the reservation precess at hotels and B & B’s  can seem overwhelming. Online travel agencies (OTA’s) claim that they can improve your reservation experience by comparing rates of hotels in your area and directing you to the best option fit to your search criteria. Although, what most people don’t realize is these third party booking companies are actually not on your side as much as you think. Here are the top 5 reasons why booking directly through the hotel or B & B website is simpler, faster, and more effective:

1. Better room assignments

Third party travel agencies such as Expedia or Travelocity offer a limited selection of rooms. Based on availability, rooms with better amenities are prioritized for guests who book direct. Also, direct bookers have the upper hand by speaking with knowledgable employees who are informative on accommodating needs such as first or second level, wheelchair accessibility, private entry, which room has the best view, etc.

2. Guaranteed lowest booking price

Most hotels and B & B’s (including us at Bears Inn) have a “lowest price guarantee” in place where they will price match any valid offer that is found through a booking agency. Online travel agencies are partial to have additional charges and fees for utilizing their services, sneaking up on you at checkout.

3. Know what you're getting into

The best property photos and room descriptions are available at the source, from the B & B website. Photos on OTA’s may be outdated and might not provide a completely accurate vision of your stay. Direct websites typically provide more information on amenities and upgrades in each room, such as an antique clawfoot tub or fireplace.

Also, direct websites can provide local information about the area you are visiting that you otherwise might not come access. After all, locals know best!

4. Your reservation is guaranteed

By eliminating the middle man and booking direct, the policies put in place by the facility you’ll be staying at are guaranteed and secure. When booking through OTA’s, you are subject to additional cancellation policies, reservation requirements, and fees that are not applicable when booking direct. Rest assured that when you arrive to your reservation, there will be no misunderstandings or mishaps.

5. Customize your stay

Talking directly with someone at the B & B or hotel you are booking is beneficial in the way that they can provide you with recommendations and accomodations that are customized to fit your stay. In our case as a B & B, we accommodate breakfast for all dietary needs whether it be gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, you name it. Also, by talking to the B & B directly other accommodations can be made such as an early or late check in, extra pillows and blankets, etc.

When searching for hotel or B  & B accommodations, always check the direct website first for the best possible reservation experience!

Evergreen Lake House Summer Concerts

Part of what makes Evergreen such a unique destination is the tight knit sense of community paired with a closeness to both nature and the people that reside here. Local community events are put together with the intention to bring everyone closer, and they sure do. Residents and visitors alike enjoy ice skating on Evergreen Lake in the winter, and in summer months kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, and  concerts at the lake house bring everyone together.

Since it is now spring, the anticipation of the Evergreen Lake house Summer Concert Series has been satisfied. As of May 29,  this free outdoor concert series has kicked off to a great start!

Concerts are held every other Wednesday from 5-9 through the end of July. Local and national artists come to play on stage, surrounded by the beautiful mountain scenery.

The selection of local food trucks is the icing on the cake when it comes to this outdoor gathering. Enjoy fresh, delicious cuisine while taking in the mountain views and music. Emerge yourself in the local atmosphere, creating the perfect one-of-a-kind Evergreen experience that will be a memory for years to come.

Evergreen Rodeo Parade

In a community rich in culture,  deeply rooted western traditions have been part of the Evergreen history for years.  Locals celebrate their western roots by attending The Evergreen Rodeo and Parade that takes place annually in mid June.  The Evergreen Rodeo is a standing local tradition; Joe Williford was a resident of Evergreen for 50 years, and the first regularly scheduled rodeo he remembers took place in 1935. In 1947 the rodeo made the transition from a local competition to professional. In response to the following demand, the Bear Creek Rodeo Association was formed and the tradition continued on.

Originally intended to entertain the guests at the Troutdale Resort in the 30’s, The Evergreen Rodeo quickly gained the attention of visitors both near and far; some of which including Tom Mix, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Ethel Merman.

Local hands and residents held those rodeos and the rodeo parade for the entertainment of themselves and visitors.  They still do. Today’s parade and rodeo are non-profit affairs, organized by local volunteers with proceeds going to charity. Equipment, materials and labor were donated by local businesses, making it a total community effort.

Past years have seen famous cowboys such as Freckles Brown, All- around World Champions Phil Lyne and Larry Mahan, and world-famous rope artist Monty Montana. More currently, appearances have been made by world class contestants such as Bruce Ford, J.D. Yates, his sister Kelly, Abe Morris and Shane Call.

Following the first night of the Rodeo, the traditional Evergreen Rodeo Parade that trails through downtown truly connects the community. Visitors and locals line the streets of downtown, taking in the beautiful mountain scenery and enjoying the presence of the local atmosphere.

As proud Evergreeners, we are honored to take place in the 2019 Evergreen Rodeo Parade! The Bears Inn will  be participating this year with a Western themed float and we would love to see you there!
